When the lights in Anthony’s bedroom refused to turn on, he didn’t even bother to curse. His sidearm was in a closet with his day-uniform jacket. All he was currently wearing was the shipsuit base layer, the one that underlay every uniform since it could act as an emergency spacesuit.

“Reynolds?” he asked the darkness.

There was a moment of silence, then the lights in the room rose up to dim, allowing him to spot the CISS agent sitting cross-legged on his bed.

“Wing Colonel,” she greeted him. “Congratulations.”

“Thanks,” he muttered at the petite blonde assassin. “Why are you on my bed?”

“Needed to talk to you,” she told him. Like him, she was wearing the shipsuit underlayer. It was in the right colors and cut to pass a first glance anywhere on a Commonwealth warship. Anyone looking twice would realize that she wasn’t wearing insignia and question her, but he doubted she’d let anyone take that second look.

“And if I’d been bringing someone back to my quarters to celebrate my promotion?” he asked drily. If someone he didn’t need to watch his back in combat had made Badem’s offer—and he had been sure they understood that sex was all they were getting—he would have considered it.

“Oh, I’d have been delighted to join in,” Reynolds told him with a wicked smile. “It’s been a while since I had a good railing.”

He raised a silent eyebrow at that and she laughed.

“Your psych profile says you’re a bisexual aromantic,” she told him. “Which I’d have figured anyway. Takes one to know one.” She shook her head. “If I thought it would help keep you onside, you’d have been inside me ages ago. Instead, it gets to be all business all the time.”

Or, at least, most of the time. That particular admission was probably being too honest, to Anthony’s mind, and he glared half-seriously at the woman.

“What do you want?” he asked. “I think it’s pretty clear now that Tecumseh has the Commonwealth’s best interests at heart. Isn’t your mission just about done?”

“My mission, Wing Colonel, is to preserve the Commonwealth,” Reynolds said sharply. “And, like the Vice Admiral, I have a broad remit and very little communication with my superiors.

“As a matter of fact, I do agree with your assessment of Tecumseh,” she admitted. “Not enough to let even you know my cover identity, but enough to think that he’s a better choice for all of our sakes than any other option on the table.

“Which actually brings me to one of the questions I wanted to ask you. If something awful happens to Tecumseh, Voclain takes over, right?”

“Right,” Anthony confirmed. “She’s the senior Commodore, followed by Commodores Volkov and Bardakçı.”

“Fu-un,” Reynolds replied. “Of those three, I’m pretty sure Volkov is okay and I’m pretty sure Voclain is watching for an angle. Banks was in my files, after all.”

Anthony blinked.

“Vice Admiral Banks was in…which files?” he asked carefully.

“Do you really think CISS doesn’t have a list of flag officers we expect to be problems in a situation like this?” Reynolds asked bluntly.
